Arrgh!

Maybe this is proof that small, insignificant things annoy me, but I
really can't let this rest.

Tell me: How come Free UNIX people seem to think that they need
special versions of generic software for their free OS?

Brad: Have you *ever* just ftp'ed "gopher.tar.gz", extracted it, and
compiled it? Trust me, it compiles out-of-the-box.

To anyone who expects magic "ports" of every bit of software they want
to use: Your OS is descended from *standard* Berkeley software. It
is generic. It is ubiquious. In the vast majority of cases, you can
ftp any UNIX source code and install it by typing "make bsd" without
leaning up against the post and waiting for some poor bastard to "port"
it for you and install the results in the packages tree on freebsd.cdrom.com.

I ftp'ed my gopher client from archie.au, Brad. I also grabbed xgopher
from the same site, which is just as good as any Windoze client for new
users (IMHO). Both clients compiled out-of-the-box; all I had to do
was change the directory specs in the makefiles to suit my preferences
and type "make". You'll find that it's the same for virtually everything
else.
