Personally, I think FreeBSD or NetBSD would suite the student better. I find
Linux source to be a jumble, and anyway, the routed is that same as the the
BSD one, with hacks. At least you get a complete source tree with *BSD.
Also you need not go out and buy CD-ROMS's, and the source can be had from
one ftp site. When I was playing with Linux, I had to keep hunting for sources.
