I've been running FreeBSD for a couple of weeks now. With a bunch of Gnu
packages, I'm running out of space on wd0 (420 MB Conner IDE drive). So
to be safe as far as IDE master/slave compatibility, I picked up another
Conner 420A ($189 at NCA) as an IDE slave. I set up the obvious CMOS
settings, and used DOS fdisk to set up the entire drive as an extended
DOS partition, so DOS (ugh) knows the drive is there. The rub is that I
can't get the kernel to use the drive; on boot it say something like
"wd1 error (no disk label)" and a similar message any time I try to access
it while running. disklabel seems unable to rectify this. Do I have to
format the drive? Would that be a DOS format? or a Unix format (which is
mentioned in the man pages but I can not find in the distribution)?
I do have Nemeth, Snyder & Seebass in front of me but I'm still stymied.

Now to head off my next set of questions once I get this solved: I've
got a few crummy Future Domain TNC-880 SCSI boards, which I would like to
use (just 1) for the time being until I can afford a decent VL bus SCSI
controller. Does the Seagate drive support this board? I also have
4 ~200MB SCSI drives that I would like to run under this board - what
will I have to do prepare these drives to bs mounted as sd0-3?

Oh yeah, what is a good source of documentation for the new Unix system
manager (long time Unix user, but I've always been able to palm off all
the dirty work on my friendly support staff)?

PS. What is the delta between 1.1.5 and 1.1.5.1? Is it worth upgrading?
How does one upgrade? And does anybody have the source for a good yapp
(Yet Another Pretty Printer)? And what drivers support the supported
sound cards?

Thanks very much for bearing with me and my painfully newbie questions.

Andrew
