Summary: Problems when writing on SONY DAT and reading on HP DAT Expires: 12 October 1994 References: <34u3h4$c9l@sundog.tiac.net> <34uanc$af5@engnews2.Eng.Sun.COM> Sender: Ian Wynne ianw@ee.su.oz.au Followup-To: Distribution: world Organization: Electrical Engineering, University of Sydney Keywords: Sony DAT, HP DAT. Does anyone know of any compatiblity problems between Sony SD 5000 and HP 35470A DAT tape drives. A friend of mine is writing the full distribution of FreeBSD to DAT using a Sun Sparc 1000 fitted with a Sony SD 5000 DAT. The Sun is running Solaris. When I try reading the tape on my pc running FreeBSD 1.1(gamma), I get the following error "128104-byte record too big". My pc has a HP 35470A DAT. The tapes were written on the Sun using tar, if I try "tar t", I get the same error message about the record being too big. My friend thought that errors might be caused by the Sun writing in compressed mode and my HP doesn't support that. We tried disabling the compression on the Sparc and it made no difference. Thanks in advance.
