I'd suggest that it's a low-level system configuration issue.
I was seeing the same problem (length = 65535 = 0xffff) until
I went into my BIOS setup and made sure that both video and
system BIOS shadowing were off, and that the IOMEM range
of the adapter (0xd8000 to 0xdffff) was not being cached.
Once I did this, the problem went away.
