I can't compare since I didn't try ecu. If its giving you a problem just
TRY minicom, it takes all of a couple of minutes to build/install it.

Of course, its was just a stepping stone for me until I had XFree running,
minicom is quite nice, but seyon is an utter PLEASURE to use. I keep
minicom around for those times when for whatever reason I don't/can't 
run X.
