My advice ... forget about creating a filter for groff ;-) Too much
unnecessary work. Much simpler is to use groff and gs. Groff creates
nice Postscript and gs 3.01 support now the stylus800 directly.

Get apsfilter (aps-3.01) to get the PS printing functionality by
default ...

This works here like a charm.
