So was I when I first came into contact with UNIX ;-)

The latest *released* version of FreeBSD is version 1.1.5.1.

You should not have any trouble installing FreeBSD. There is a full
set of installation notes available. (Email me if you want a copy.)
Installing FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 on a system which also has DOS on it is
relatively straight forward. The only real catch to watch out for, is
to make sure that FreeBSD uses the same disk geometry that DOS does.

You can use twm (if you really want to :-)). Fvwm and other nice ones
are also available.

Refer to the installation notes. (They should give you a good idea.)

Yes, there is a FAQ for FreeBSD -- check out freebsd.cdrom.com
