I have a FreeBSD machine that is doing almost the same, 'cept for being a real NNTP server (you may want to rethink that option). I have a small network of machines hiding behind a FreeBSD node connected through a PPP line. I run the NCSA httpd (packaged up for FreeBSD), wu-ftpd (likewise), and a proglet called nntp_hopper that I wrote that takes any incoming NNTP connections from the subnet and makes a mirror connection to my network provider's INN net-news server. I get a few hundred http accesses a day, 5 -> 10 anon ftp users, and one or two open newsreading sessions at any given time. )1- Is there a WWW, NNTP, and ftp servers for BSD-type OS'? ) I checked NCSA, but found nothing for BSD. ) (BSD386, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux?) {linux!=BSD} But yes, all are available for all of those systems. The BSD's come with a vanilla ftpd, but wu-ftpd (supports fetches of whole directory trees, compression / uncompression on the fly, etc.) is easily compiled. The NCSA httpd is a snap to get running. NNTP servers (INN, CNEWS) are on the FreeBSD ported software lists. ) )2- What is the most suitable flavor of the above for this kind of job ) in terms of: ) a) Internet connectivity. ) b) Communication reliability. ) c) Number of peripherals supported (#of drivers included). ) d) Ease of installation and ease of administration. As far as I know, NetBSD and FreeBSD act pretty much the same with respect to being able to compile software (i.e. if it works with one, it will work with the other without much trouble). They both use the same networking code, and share most of the same hardware drivers, so they both support pretty much the same list of devices. As for internet connectivity -- what sort of connection do you want? With that many concurrent ftp users, I would suggest using some sort of terminal server or the like to handle a 56K line or ISDN. Do any BSD'ers out there have a line like that conencted directly to your box? What kind of hardware does it take? I would suggest a EISA based DX2/66 or greater with a good SCSI controller with a few drives (if you really want that news feed local).
