Keywords: IDE FreeBSD h/drive bus vesa Is it possible to use a VESA local bus IDE controller with FreeBSD? Yes, I have been using one. If so, will such a controller produce faster throughput or anything else advantageous? Not unless you can take advantage of certain special functions which most VL IDE controllers support. THis would require changes to the BSD driver. The one I use supports some sort of synchronous burst mode and comes which a DOS driver to take advantage of it. It also depends on the speed of your drive and the speed of your CPU. The other advantage is that the controller I bought also can be jumpered as the secondary controller. This allowed me to use two controllers and four drives.
