Well, I must admit I experienced similar problems when I tried to run ghostcript on a FreeBSD machine with the epson 9-pin driver. I tried the latest version which was almost O.K. but you would still get garbage as output every other page. (The machine was connected to a star NL-10 which is meant to be EPSON FX-80 compatible). I am not using the epson driver anymore so I have never been able to find the answer; from my point of view it looks like a problem of the epson driver (actually both 9-pin drivers fail to produce proper output!).
