WHOOPS.  I used ftp with ASCII type transfer instead of BINARY type.
I am redownloading with binary and expect the problem to evaporate.

Why doesn't ftp make binary transfers the default, since they seem to
work with everything?  Is this some kind of efficiency issue, or what?
