My moral: Never use a getty which knows nothing about a modem on a
modem line. Use mgetty instead. It doesn't require to switch your modem
to be braindead (no echo, no response messages, auto answer even if the
machine is down). mgetty will check every hour if your modem is still
alive. mgetty is able to log the connect messages if a user dials in.
mgetty will print /etc/issue before the login prompt. mgetty will
receive faxes for you if you have a faxmodem.

Ask archie for mgetty if you don't want trouble with your modem.
mgetty works fine on FreeBSD 1.1.5 here.

Bye,
Knarf
