I observed the same on my system using X11R5 with the XF86_S3 (X11R6)
server but not when running tin but any other program I can't specify.
My system: FreeBSD-1.1.5.1, i486DX2-66, 20MB, Adaptec 1742, #9 GXE 64 (1MB),
Conner 520MB SCSI, WD1007 (ESDI) with 660MB Seagate
When I don't specify generic_s3 my S3 server detects mmio_928 and
crashes after sone time with a destroyed screen (vertical color bars).
The crash when switching between X and ttyv? occurs most when the server
is restarted (connecting via a chooser or xdm).
