This is probably some fluke, or NT doesn't enable the FIFOs or some
such. I have had ETERNAL problems with the SMC All-In-One IO chips
under WfWg 3.11, NT 3.1 with some service packs, BSD and if I had
used a DOS comms prog. on the box, I'm SURE I would have had probs.
	as well.

When I called the dealer, he admitted that the SMC chips are buggy and
sent me patches at least for Windows/WfWg [I hadn't yet seen the prob.
in NT, and I don't use NT to talk to the modem anyway...]

The SMC isn't the only chip with this problem, but it's probably the
most popular one, as it's now the "hip" thing to use on P5 motherboards
even from [supposedly] reputable places like Micronics [that was mine].

Uhhm, I think FreeBSD and NetBSD work OK with "Huge" chips, as
long as the chips don't have BUGS! Make sure you avoid the Evil
SMC IO chips and clones thereof.
