If you turn off compression you may well get better ping times but
your volume transfer rates are likely to suffer.

I've found that enabling compression BUT disabling MNP10 seems to work
pretty well as an all-round solution. (YMMV, etc.)

BTW I'm getting ~180ms pings down my 14k4 link; down 28k8 links we
generally get around 130-140ms times. (DTE speed 38400 for 14k4,
57600 for 28k8. V42/42bis/etc enabled, MNP* disabled.)

: roughly 25,900 bits/sec. Given the overhead of ftp/tcp/ip, this

This sounds reasonable. What sort of files are you transferring?
Again, talking from my 14k4 link, I get around 1.2-1.3kb/sec for
binaries and up to 3kb/sec for text - the compression on the modems
really shines through here.
