It's not the finger daemon that does the matching of any sort.

Fingerd just forks off the finger binary.  The finger binary does do
matches on the first gecos field.  (i.e. you can finger a first name
or last name on your machine and it will match.)

As far as wildcards, all I can say is goodluck.
