This is very true. I am a newcomer and am looking into your operating system to see what it is all about. Granted, reading a bunch of flames is mildly amusing it really isn't very informative. >Please, Linux does NOT suck. As the old saying goes "You >really can't argue with success." It is interesting that Linux does appear to be much more popular. I know that awhile ago I was considering Linux and FreeBSD; My main reason to go with Linux was that its newsgroups were getting much more activity. Though this might seem like a silly reason, it seemed very important to a newcomer to installing a unix operating system. I figured that I would get much better support with Linux. Another reason was that installing FreeBSD v1.0 with my hardware configuration was not very easy. I had 20 megs of RAM and a 1542CF SCSI controller; with the bounce-buffer support not there I wasnt about to pull out my memory just to install. I saw this as a major obstacle; I also saw this as an indicator of the rate of development considering Linux had the bounce-buffer support at the same time. The last reason was and still is: I am not really sure of what the differences and relationships between FreeBSD, NetBSD and 386BSD. I gather that it is more of a difference than the various Linux distributions. I've looked at the FAQs but they always seemed to refer to 386BSD or NetBSD or FreeBSD only and I could never piece it all together to make the total picture. With these mild confusions on my part I decided to go with Linux. However I am once again looking to FreeBSD (or the others if I could ever figure out what the differences are). Hopefully I will figure it out. -- Wilfred J. Despe I really need to develop a real sig. wdespe@nyx.cs.du.edu wdespe@mcs.com
