Here's a followup to my own original post:

	once I log in with Kermit, I suspend the session and type:
	
   ifconfig sl0 inet mydynamicip gatewayip netmask 255.255.255.0 metric 1
   route add default gatewayip
   slattach -c -h -s 19200 /dev/cua00

	Works like a charm!
	I also had to add my nameserver to the hosts file(? I think it 
was the hosts file).  Well, thanx again for all the posts about it.  
Somehow, after hacking away, I got it to work.
