In article <3a0904$33j@Mercury.mcs.com> wdespe@MCS.COM (Wilfred Despe) writes: Another reason was that installing FreeBSD v1.0 with my hardware configuration was not very easy. I had 20 megs of RAM and a 1542CF SCSI controller; with the bounce-buffer support not there I wasnt about to pull out my memory just to install. I saw this as a major obstacle; I also saw this as an indicator of the rate of development considering Linux had the bounce-buffer support at the same time. This is a bad assumption to make. The rate of development is high on all the systems. But every system has different areas of emphasis. Just because FreeBSD and NetBSD didn't have bounce buffers at the time didn't mean they were developing more slowly -- they were just developing in different areas. The biggest reason there are three free unix systems is mainly because there are so many different areas of interest. Linux developed bounce buffers first, but it didn't develop everything first. There are lots of things that NetBSD and FreeBSD have that Linux doesn't (and vice versa). Linux gave you an important feature you were looking for. If it meets your needs the best, use it. But don't assume that just because a certain set of features exists only in Linux that the same isn't true in the other BSD systems. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael L.
