I am advising all parties that have NOT tried a UNIX-like OS before; or have tried a UNIX-like OS, but have not tried one of the above ---- not to install any of the above systems in the near future. Why? For many months (almost two years now) a bitter, sometimes ugly, battle has been waged by all parties. The net result (no pun intended) is name-calling, fast paced (loosely-written) code and a real disregard for professionalism. Why am I making this post? I am making this post in an effort to move ahead with the work at hand -- but sure as not, this article will be followed a long trail of flames, insults and innuendos. What to watch for? Claims will be made that each version is stable, great and will definitely run on your system. That statement, that "all will work fine" is plainly a lie and this new chapter in the UNIX saga will only become known as "Round Two of OS de-jour". My evidence. The letters from all OS groups are now getting even nastier than in the days when I started. The week is not even over and patches are available for those OSs available via ftp sites. My conjecture. They're on the run, they don't have a clue as to how to write decent code and the predictions I've made in the past about the quiet developer may come full circle. My recommendation. If you must install a UNIX-like system TODAY, try LINUX, Minix or OS/2. Otherwise, please wait for the "shakeout", not all parties will last in this round. This notice will be re-posted and modified as is appropriate. Thanks for all your help. -- Jesus Monroy Jr jmonroy@netcom.com Zebra Research /386BSD/device-drivers /fd /qic /clock /documentation ___________________________________________________________________________
