I admit it, I'm a bit too lazy to wait for FreeBSD-2.0 release to come out, so I'm going ahead with the alpha install. I will have two hard disks at my disposal this time: (roughly) 230- and 540-megabyte Maxtor IDE drives. I intend to make the smaller drive wd0, and the larger one wd1. The main question is the partitioning scheme. I have heard that performance improves dramatically when one puts the swap partition on "the other disk." Problem is that my /usr partition under 1.1.5.1-R got so ridiculously big that putting swap and /usr on the same drive doesn't sound like it would be a good idea. But I've also heard that the swap partition should be on the disk which doesn't hold / (the root partition). Which logic is correct? My partitioning scheme will probably end up looking like this: wd0: / (~20MB) /var (12MB) /home (rest of the disk, user accounts) wd1: /usr (most of the rest of the disk) others, perhaps /usr/src, /usr/X11R6, /usr/local, /usr/build... The big question, once again: where would you put the swap space? Another large question which haunts my mind has to do with the extracting of the bindist. Is it possible to mount fd0 as pcfs and copy over with the minimal (practically binary-less) system?
