Some notes on what I have found with the Alpha release: 1. I had a real pain in the butt getting the install floppies to work properly with a freshly formatted SCSI drive. This drive did not even have an initialized MBR from a previous OS installation. I booted DOS and finally made a 1MB DOS partition using FDISK. FreeBSD then installed without any complaints. I was able to delete the DOS partition using FreeBSD's fdisk during the installation procedure. 2. The boot blocks appear to be slightly brain dead. The prompt 'Boot:' never times out and loads the default kernel. Pressing 'Enter' fixes this problem. 3. I like the new "look" during the installation process. This gives FreeBSD a more polished feel. More help screens would be nice. 4. Installing from the InterNet is a cool idea, but the script for doing this is not so robust. I have a slow modem line and the script timed out waiting for a connection to freebsd.cdrom.com. This worked fine once I had FTPed the appropriate files to a local machine. 5. Where is pppd? I was hoping I could connect to my InterNet provider... Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait. 6. I did not notice a big change in the "speed" of the machine. I guess this is good as the kernel with similar options compiled in has gotten bigger than my previous 1.1.5.1R kernel. FreeBSD Team: Thank you for allowing us a sneak preview of the 2.0 release. Please keep up the good work (and maybe give us a patch kit to take 2.0 Alpha to 2.0 Release ;-)
