Well, this may not be quite the answer you're looking for, but I run Sam
Leffler's FlexFAX package (see the binary dist and sources on
ftp.sgi.com) to handle my FAXing needs.  It can supervise the line for
incoming calls (switching between FAX and data as necessary) and get out
of the way when UUCP or PPP or kermit wants to dial out.
