Message-ID: <1994Nov27.140846.124861@slate.mines.colorado.edu> Date: Sun, 27 Nov 1994 14:08:46 GMT Organization: Colorado School of Mines X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL1] Lines: 51 Hola, Pardon my stupid questions, but I grew up talking system V, and foreign languages never was my strength. =) I ordered the O'Reilly 4.4 set, but, in the mean time... I brought my office DEC machine home, with FreeBSD, and I installed FreeBSD on my personal machine as well, and now I'm trying to network them together via ethernet. (Both running 2.0-R). Problem: On my home machine, I have a Wangtek 5150PK (qic) drive and a 3c509-combo network card (I know, I know, this card bites to program.) The default kernel has both of these configured to use port 0x300, so the 3c509 card doesn't get probed. 1) Which kernel tunable files do I need to modify ? My familiar /etc/conf/<stuff>.d/ directory doesn't exist. 2) "man"ning around the system, I get references to some /sys/conf... and /sys/i386... files, but they don't exist as well. I'm downloading the source dists. Do I need to get all the source distribution to recompile the kernel ? 3) What's the command I'm going to use to recompile the kernel and make sure the /dev entries are correct ? (ie. the equivalent to svr4's /etc/conf/bin/idbuild.) Will the "old" kernel be kept as well ? 4) The DEC machine of course has the DEC depca ethernet adapter. Is there any support for this card at all ? 5) Just how badly will my 3c509 behave on the system ? The FAQ mentions a /usr/src/KNOWNBUGS file, but not having the source dists yet, it doesn't appear on my system. Is any kind of NFS a no-no ? Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any hints and apologize for the basic questions. -Ade Barkah -- ps. thanks to whomever compiled the xfree binaries. The package was easy to install and seems to work well (I'm using the 8514 server.) It was almost as seamless as Metrolink's commercial X offering for SVR4. Hooking up xdm was easy too. Now if I can just find motif... (tvm gotta go.)
