In addition to the follow-up by Pascal Haible, who answered some more
of my questions via email, I also received another answer confirming
that the HGC-1280 is supported by the XFree86 monochrome server. The
monitor is not VGA-compatible, though.

By the way, stupid me has found in between the HGC-1280 mentioned in
the XFree86 README.
