After successive makes, it does work, but it's quite annoying. He told me that he seemed to recall seeing something about a BIOS option change or something to that effect, perhaps something to do with floating point handling. If somebody could point me to an FAQ or tell me what the simple solution is (if there is one), I would be greatly appreciative.
