Hmm, I have the exact opposite experience.  I'm logged in from home on a
Intel Faxmodem internal that I plugged in to my PC and did nothing else
of consequence on.  I'm connecting to /dev/cua02 if that mater.

BTW - I'm using the kermit package from the ALPHA release.
