Hi there,

We are trying to establish a controlled environment for measurement of
computer resource use (CPU, disk traffic etc.). Currently we are using
the ttcp program to characterise the resource demand of TCP/IP
software for different parameter settings and for different
implementations of TCP. We have a dedicated Ethernet and dedicated
workstations connected to this net. Still, we need to find out which
"housekeeping" activities that Unix itself undertakes during our
measurement experiments.

The following questions arise: What is Unix housekeeping? How frequent
are the housekeeping operations? To which degree does Unix
housekeeping influence our experiments? Which housekeeping operations
cause the most disturbance? Can we control these "malicious"
operations during our experiments? What is the minimum of
housekeeping tasks that need to take place during measurement
experiments? To which degree is the resource use caused by Unix
housekeeping accounted for in the resource accounting for user
processes?

We hope somebody can give us some hints....

Thanks in advance.
