Here's a good one. I posted a few days ago about my keyboard
hanging in 1.1.5.1 after being idle for a period of time. Well,
the situation got worse as the hours went by. Just yesterday,
I could barely log in without losing the keyboard. And this is
after months of no problems. To make matters worse, a DOS machine
on the same segment started having the same problem (in addition to
random beeping and total system hang) yesterday. At this point I was
convinced that my problem was not a FreeBSD bug, but external.

I thought about power. They were both on the same circuit... so I ran
a long extension cord into the kitchen and plugged the machine in there.
Worked for a little while, but sure enough hung again.

I thought about the network itself. Unplugged both machines from my concentrator
and even took off the transceivers. No good.

At 4:30 this morning I was awoken by the DOS machine beeping like crazy in
a random manner. I got up and checked it out - simply up in windows with
nothing running. I shut it off. Now, this being the noisier of the two machines,
I could now here a crackling sound coming from _something_. After a bit of
investigation I noticed that the amp speakers connected to my CD card were
emitting a random crackling noise. Something one might expect from a mis-tuned
radio. I fiddled with the volume knobs thinking I just had them up too high
listening to "Rush" the night before. No fiddling would squelch the noise. I
held it up to one ear and to my surprise, I heard the sound in stereo! My
lab is situated next to the front door, which I opened. I have a bug zapper
plugged into the outside outlet exactly opposite the outlet I have the two
machines plugged into; I am willing to bet they are on the same circuit. I looked
up and noticed a large flying creature (at this point unrecognizable :->) had
wedged itself into the powered cage and fried. In fact, it had created a
sizable short and was still conducting, apparently, as the zapper itself was
noticeably dimming the porch light with every burst! I unplugged this demon
machine immediately. Upon reboot, everything appeared normal inside (the speakers
stopped hissing, too!). Went home at lunch and the keyboard was still operational!

I believe I have solved my "bug" problem (pun completely intended). I submit
my new-found appliance wisdom to the net...
