I got this behavior while the floppy tape (ft) driver was in my kernel. The probe would scrozzle up the floppy drive and the BIOS would complain on the next reboot, but reset it to the default. One way to test this without building a new kernel is to boot with the `-c' option and type `disable fdc0' at the config prompt. -- Ben Jackson
