I had a similar problem with the term package. To get 8bit mode on a
serial port, I used (in my case, for port tty00):

	stty -f /dev/tty00 crtscts
	stty -f /dev/tty00 -parenb

Because I wanted to prevent any applications from changing these settings,
I also applied the settings to the LOCK_STATE device (see "man sio"):

	stty -f /dev/ttyl00 crtscts
	stty -f /dev/ttyl00 -parenb

According to "man stty", it is also possible to grab a copy of the settings
with the "-g" switch.

This might help.
