We have uptimes of at least four months, sometimes six. In April of 94, we had an NIS master up for over nine months and only rebooted it because we felt the environment had changed and we did not want to be suprised if the system did crash and did not boot up properly. Of course we have UPS and a very strict change control policy. We don't play with production systems, or put any software, even SUN patches without testing them first on a "test" configuration. Not a small operation either, we have over 300 Sun Sparcs, mostly Sparc 2's, but fair amounts of 1+s, 10s and 20s. We also have about 150 HP systems, all networked and stable as well. My advice to you would be to develop a change management process and don't accept the "let's try this" attitude from your support contacts; demand root cause analysis and prompt problem resolution! Beleive me, your clients will notice and be happy with you$$$.
