I use NetBSD 1.0 with pcvt, which I think comes with FreeBSD as well, if you
have pcvt compiled into your kernel and the utilities compiled, try

scon -p black,42,42,40 -p lightgray,0,15,0

Those are the settings I use for black text on a light gray background
