 I have crashed FreeBSD 2.0R twice with tar trying to write to the
HP DAT drive I own. Something basic is broken. The HP drive is a 
know good drive on SunOS 4, 5, Linux.... 

 The system complains about 'non-media hardware error' and other
general errors, such as input/output error on device. ...

 I can't post, since inews is now broken. You can post this if you like
