Intel invested heavily in their campaign (Intel Inside) to convince us of some extra value(s) of selecting Intel. We were to expect reliability, performance and backing from the leader in the field. Then Intel is confronted with the conundrum of the Pentium FDIV problem. Rather than furthering their 'Intel Inside' image, Intel rationalized that FDIV really wasn't that important to the majority of users and opted for the short term, least costly solution. Having made that decision, they can only live with it. That Intel views their customer base as relatively unsophisticated users and apparently game oriented, sort of removes them from the serious application market. At least in my humble opinion. It may very well be that Intel has made a business decision in their favor. But, I can't see how Intel based systems can be taken seriously by the engineering and scientific communities from this point on.
