Have you tried appropriate kernel tuning? I use a Sparc 2 with SunOS4.1.3 for our primary news server here. Our last reboot was 36 days ago, but that was for hardware maintenance. We did have problems before customising the kernel for the uses of the machine, mostly not enough processes or IP channels to handle the feeds and readers. More RAM was a big help too.
