A closer reading of the XF86_S3 man page brought that to my attention. With the following entires in Section "Device", the S3 server now works on my IBM PS/Value Point 486 under FreeBSD 2.0-RELEASE: Ramdac "ATT20C490" Option "dac_8_bit" Option "nolinear" Thanks to all who responded here or via e-mail.
