It's pretty important for us vi users. Here's where I'll look pretty stupid: I don't remember where it is on the 102, even though I use one at work. I'm typing this on a 101 at home. The 101's ESC is at the left end of the row of function keys, which are arranged across the top of the normal typing keys. There's about one key width between the ESC and F1 keys, and similarly about one key height between the numeric keys and the row of function keys. There are no function keys on the left of the typing keys on the 101 (but there ARE function keys at the left of the 102, this being the primary difference that I can see between the 101 and 102. The Ultra has function keys in BOTH places: left and top). Now, I'll admit, as a former vi user, that I'd really rather see the ESC key immediately above the TAB key, but as an alternate location, I don't find that it's too bad, since it's sitting out there isolated from any other key, and you just have to blindly stab in the general direction and you're likely to hit it, and unlikely to hit anything else. (BTW, the key which is where I'd like to see the ESC key is the ~ and ` key.)
