The reason it works under DOS is because DOS uses the BIOS routines, but since most are non re-entrant it's not possible to use them under a pre-emptive multi-tasking system. That, and the performance is so bad that it's unusable. Under DOS this isn't noticeable since there are no context switches so the application always has access to the hardware. If you can get a supported SCSI card it will work fine. See the FreeBSD FAQ for a list of supported cards.
