The motherboard is 'upgradable' and there is a spare 486 carrier alongside the 386 chip. The 386 is an Am386dx/dxl 25 (at least thats whats written on it) made by Advanced Micro Devices. What I'd like to know is how easy would it be to upgrade to a 486 sx 25 and would it be worth it. Such chips are available at the local emporiom for about 50 quid (GBP) which, being a student is just about within reach. Is this all I'd need, ie unplug the 386, fling in the 486 and bobs your uncles, flo's your aunt or is there a whole can of worms associated with such a change. Well, I don't have an Uncle Bob or Aunt Flo... but... How are we supposed to know? ;-) It all depends on your motherboard. Read the book or call the manufacturer if you aren't sure. It just depends on how your motherboard was designed. And, I wouldn't bother with a crippled SX. Get an AMD 486DX or DX2... They're cheaper than the Intel chips, and you get a great AMD product. The Cyrix 486DX (not DLC) chips are pretty decent and cheap, too. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael L.
