"prevailing newbie derision here?"  I'm sorry, but I kind of take
exception to that.  I think that a number of people go far out of their
way to try to answer questions in this newsgroup, and I've never really
seen newbies derided so much as perhaps things like the hated
"Linix vs BSD" thread.  Are you sure you're not confusing the two?
