To many people, server doesn't just mean file or printer service server, but also cycle server. For example, when I'm at home and want to run Mathematica, I telnet to a machine that has a Mathematica license and run it there, with the display set to my machine. >How about software that supports a decent office e-mail package (not >POP) like cc:mail? Some of use rely on computers to keep our business running. The PINE sources come with an IMAP2bis server which works just fine under Linux. There should be several ordinary PC and Mac IMAP2bis compliant office mail packages (I agree POP is inadequate). One option is the PC version of PINE, if you've got DOS users and not Windows users (yes, I know there's a Winsock version of PINE that runs under Windows, but its interface isn't very GUI, so you'd have to pull teeth to get Windows folks to use it). I'm hoping the Netscape folks will put IMAP2bis/IMAP4 MIME-compatible mail support in Netscape soon -- then most folks wouldn't have to use *anything* but Netscape to access the internet (I don't think your *typical* user will ever need or want Unix/VMS shell access). (Hm, maybe a http<->IMAP gateway daemon is a worthwhile inter-semester project. Opinion?) -- Doug DeJulio mailto:ddj+@pitt.edu http://www.pitt.edu/~ddj/
