Not to knock BSDI, they have a really good product but if you want a free
unix then FreeBSD (or NetBSD but I am quite clearly biased :-) will do the
job fine. Walnut Creeks ftp site, which has to be one of the busiest in the
world, runs FreeBSD and it's more than up to the task. Pity Linux put you
off trying the other free unix clones, FreeBSD certainly works better than
most in these environments.

If you want the security of knowing you can phone someone up and get help
when things go wrong then BSDI is the way to go since they have support.
If not then I'd say go for FreeBSD.
