Do you have the motherboard BIOS properly configured to use the NCR controller? Is everything terminated in the proper way? I'm not saying that FreeBSD is right and Linux is wrong, but different drivers can be sensitive to different things, and it could be that you have some misconfiguration that Linux simply isn't bothered by. I've used the NCR controller just fine in multiple FreeBSD 2.0 boxes, so I'm pretty sure it works! Also, news isn't the best way to get support on FreeBSD problems.
