Hello,

I've just installed FreeBSD 2.0 Release and have tried to get it to talk to my
Tandberg 3800 QIC-525 cartridge tape drive ...

MT STATUS keeps telling me, 07: unknown tape drive, even after I've used TAR
CVH to successfully write a tape.

When i use TAR VL to read a backup i get messages that relate to io errors and
an inability to read the tape. Thought some times after specifing the density
of the actual tape write it will reread the tape. In the dos environment I use
ARCSolo and Sytos Plus to backup several Novell partitions on the file server.

The drive has worked flawlessly for two years and has just had a "grease and
oil change" with a clean bill of health .. I, really don't understand what is
happening. On startup, FreeBSD interogates the drive and gets this information
back,

aha0 targ4 lun0: type1(sequential) removable SCSI2
aha0 targ4 lun0: <TANDBERG TDC 3800 =04:>
st0:density code 0x0, 512-byte blocks, write enabled

this is with a tape in the drive and the door closed.

By way of further information, I've used Linux on this same machine and Adaptec
AHA-1542b controller and the tape drive worked well and actually streamed when
it was writing 525 meg tapes. It almost never streamed in DOS and rarely in
OS/2.

PS, this drive will read and write QIC-150, QIC-250, and QIC-525 tapes. it has
done so with ArcSolo, Sytos Plus and gtak in both MS DOS and OS/2 too and from
a Novell file server and local SCSI disk drives.

I've read the FAQ, and still it isn't clear where I may have gone wrong any
help would be appreciated.

Regards, for the new year

Thanks in advance
