And I thought the Wild West days were over. OK, I have been doing production and development support ( read generic admin ) and I have be insulated from the *unwashed masses* of C code by my weekly paycheck. If I, for a minute, seperated ~Operating Systems* from *Command Interpeters~ I would be classified too low level and get reprimanded or fired like the last time I tried that trick. To stay on top I have to be able to talk intelligently about the inter-operations between all these popular systems. Except for Novell Loadable Modules, Linix would take the cake. It's free and the amazing competition is keeping it moving very fast. Perl has made me very useful in the database to dissimilar database transfers. I develop those scripts at home on a 386/16. But we know what managment thinks about free stuff. So that leaves Novell Unix- How did they miss Novix ?? But it is getting horrible reviews ( mine wont boot ). And who owns Plan-9? Novell or the folks who conspired to sue Linus. The bottom line is that I will need to know all this network file system stuff, remote execution paradigms which are safe yet simple enough to teach to reliable operators who in turn can become admins. While the net can get ugly, debate is really good. If push, or market ( dare to dream ) an application, I want to feel as if the code wasn't released too quickly. Otherwise I will have to go back to school, learn c and c++ and take a major pay cut and be called junior. cheers - the jaded stuffed bear aka JohnvV
