This does not sound like a slip problem but a hardware problem.
I have no such problems with FreeBSD.


RE FreeBSD box

are you using a 16550 UART if not your uart may be at fault
check that there is not an interupt conflict on the serial port.

RE Spark station

If I remember correctly the std serial port is not all that hot 
have you upgraded it?

The next obvious thing is flow control on the modems.
