After some consternation, I've gotten the X386 port up and running. 
I've noticed that it pays no attention to mouse clicks unless the mouse
is moving - ie, if in twm, I LMB the desktop, no menu appears, but LMBing
and dragging brings up the menu.  This happens whether I bring up X with
the generic startx script or xdm.  My mouse entry in XConfig is


Microsoft "/dev/com1"     
   baud 9600
   Emulate3Buttons
