I get the same thing from my perfectly-valid-looking 800x600 Modeline.
I'm clueless.  Can the probe code perhaps not find a match for clock rates?
I've a vanilla TVGA8900CL (slow!) and a bone-head Multi-sync (31.5 + 35.5)
monitor, and the 640x480 and 1024x768i modes both match nicely.
